A CONVINCING ten shot win on the Brighton sea front sealed victory for Richard Skeggs in the inaugural Minches Trophy.

The British number 47 came back from an early defeat in Littlehampton to beat Oliver Florence 4-1.

After losing by four shots at Sharksville Fantasy Golf at Harbour Park, Skeggs then narrowly took the next two rounds at the Western Putting Crazy Golf course and Norfolk Gardens Adventure Golf.

With the Horley-based novice taking a 2-1 lead along the coast to Brighton, Florence then fell apart at Peter Pan’s Adventure Golf and a solid score of 31 over the 12 holes handed the title to Skeggs before a record quick one-hour long trip in the POLO up to New Malden for the final round.

Skeggs, who lies 11th in the BMGA season only rankings, said he was delighted to win the first ever Minches Trophy – a prize to be fought over throughout the season by the two old school friends.

“I’m obviously honoured to be the first to get my hands on the cup and I’m already looking forward to defending it when we go to Aberdeen next month,” he said. “It’s even more pleasing as I was behind early on.”

For British number 74 Florence however there was disappointment.

“It was the same old story of not being able to follow through on a good start,” he said. “To not even take the contest to the final round at Jurassic Encounter Adventure Golf – the spiritual home of the trophy – felt like a bereavement of sorts.”

Skeggs is still waiting to be presented with the prize after the pair visited C&M Trophies in Littlehampton High Street only to find it was the only shop on the south coast to shut at 1pm on a Saturday.

It is hoped an engraved cup will be ready in time for the trip to the Scottish Open in May.
