Ruth Burke makes history by winning the Wasps Open PDF Print E-mail

The second Sussex Wasps Open was competed for on Sunday 2nd September at Dobbies Garden Centre in Peterborough.
After many months of preparation, the tournament produced some high quality action before
Ruth Burke triumphed with a victory, with a comfortable seven shot advantage at the end. A four round total score of 96 (level par) for Ruth was enough to give Ruth her first tour title, on her 93rd attempt, becoming the first woman to win a BMGA Strokeplay event in the process. 2017 Champion Derek Bentall finished second on seven over after beating fellow Sussex Wasps teammate, Ed Pope, in a playoff.

2018 Sussex Wasps Open Champion Ruth Burke

Following Ruth's victory, she said "I am very pleased to have won the second Sussex Wasps Open tournament. I believe this is the first Open tournament in the UK which has been won by a female British player. I am glad the recor will be associated with the Wasps Club, and with the course designed and built by the BMGA's long standing sponsors and supporters, Urban Crazy.
The welcome at the course at Dobbies was second to none. The staff could not have been more helpful both at the course and the food outlets.
The spirit of fair play is embodied by all the members of the Wasps Club, the pace being set by the captain Steve Lovell who will always go the extra mile (or rather more than that on Saturday) for fellow competitors and anyone who loves minigolf. Thanks to all of them, but especially Steve and Derek Bentall for showing me round the course on Saturday and to Derek and Ed Pope for their play in the final round.
Marion Hartley and James Hollingrake were my playing partners in the earlier rounds. I think we were a supportive group and we won the team competition, which was well deserved from them. The whole competition was played in excellent spirits by the field who as usual came from far and wide to take part, which is always appreciated.
Thank you to Steve for acknowledging in his closing speech that this win is part of the BMGA's history. I am pleased that a female has won even if it has take until the 20th anniversary year of the BMGA. I have been competing for most of that time, so it really shows you should never give up! I am also proud to be a pensioner and I hope that this win will be an encouragement to other older people."
