2018 CEMGC Open at Dunton Hills recap PDF Print E-mail

Saturday 14th July saw minigolfers from across all the BMGA Clubs take on the challenge of Dunton HIlls in the 2018 Cambridgeshire and Essex Open. After a hard fought and thrilling competition, on the toughest course in Britain,  congratulations went to Michael Smith for winning his third Cambridgeshire and Essex Open having won the event previously in 2015 and 2016.

Dunton Hills is notoriously difficult being one of the toughest courses on the tour and Michael led the way after two rounds having shot 41 both times (the course record stands at 39). With a final round of 43, Michael claimed victory by eight strokes.

Steve Lovell (SWMGC) finished eight shots behind to take the silver medal with a total score of 133; his fourth consecutive second place finish in this tournament. Ruth Burke (MMGC) was two shots further back in third with a total score of 135.

Speaking following his victory, Michael said “I’m delighted to have won the 2018 CEMGC Open. Dunton Hills is, without question, the most difficult minigolf course I have ever played. I was proud of the way I coped with the course both mentally and tactically, and how consistent I was over the three rounds. I'd like to thank the CEMGC for running such an enjoyable tournament.

There were a variety of other prizes on offer across the day too including multiple spot prizes for the first ace on each lane, a pairs event and a handicap competition in round two. Seve Kukielka (MMGC) won the aces event with three aces. James Rutherford (CEMGC) and Will Donnelly (MMGC) won the pairs competition, played in the first round, with a combined score of 91. Laura Skinner (WMGC) and John Sharp (KMGC) won the handicap competition in round two.
