BMGA End Of Year update and a look ahead to the 2018 season PDF Print E-mail

As we approach the end of 2017, BMGA Chairman Sean Homer takes a look back at the season, and at what the year ahead has in store.

It’s been another busy year on the BMGA tour. 17 domestic competitions took place with several new names taking their debut tour victories (step forward Steve, Mark and Derek) and you can see the full Roll Of Honour for the season here. We also had plenty of Great Britain interest in a number of overseas events (from Ireland to the Czech Republic and culminating in the WAGM and the World Championships in Croatia). We also saw two new Club Opens take place this season which is always a great sign for us with the Sussex Wasps and Worthing Minigolf Club both hosting successful events and are welcome additions to the tour.

We saw a new name on the BMGA SHIELD for 2017 with Ed Pope taking the honours after a hard fought season, which has also seen a number of players moving up through the order of merit – all of which bodes well for the new season ahead.

Plans for the 2018 season are well underway – expect announcements early in the new year regarding our big events for the year along with some exciting and unique initiatives for our Order Of Merit and key events for the season. We have announced our Early Bird membership incentive, along with introducing a new Tour Pro badge (full details can be found here) and will be communicating with players interested in representing Great Britain in 2018 shortly (a timely reminder as you only have until the end of December to register your interest here).

Exciting times ahead.

The Executive Committee have been working all season at ways to improve and enhance the experience for our members and non-members alike and we are pleased to welcome Ruth Burke onto the EC for the 2018 season. Ruth has been a great supporter of the BMGA for many years and brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the Committee and this will help us continue the great work going forward. The work the EC do throughout the year is vital to the success of the tour and development of the game and I hope that their hard work and dedication is recognised by all of our members – I certainly appreciate all they do behind the scenes.

Which brings me on to the final piece of information regarding the year ahead. After twelve years on the Executive Committee, ten of which have been as your Chairman, I have decided that 2017 was my final season as part of the BMGA and I am stepping down as Chairman at the end of December. Following discussions with the current EC, I am pleased to announce that Paul Preston will be taking the reigns as acting Chair from January 1st. This will mean that there will be a new vacancy on the EC for 2018 and further communications regarding this will follow in the new year.

I would like to thank all the members, players, course owners, WMF officials and EC members that have supported me during my tenure and I leave with a great sense of pride in what has been achieved over the years, both domestically and internationally. I have always believed that the BMGA and minigolf at all levels in the UK should be inclusive and welcoming to everyone, irrespective of background and ability and above all it must be fun! This has always been at the forefront of everything I have done over the years – things may not always be perfect, but I strongly believe that we have hit the mark more often than not!

I wish you all a great 2018.
