2017 World Minigolf Championships recap from Zaton, Croatia

Will Donnelly represented Great Britain at the 2017 World Minigolf Championships in Zaton, Croatia taking place from Wednesday 20th September to Saturday 23rd September. This was another successful event for Great Britain following on from the 2017 World Adventure Golf Masters where 9 players from the UK took part earlier in the month.

Will finished in 79th place in the Men’s Category out of 103 participants. Speaking following his return from Croatia, Will said “I have had a fantastic three weeks in Zaton playing in the 2017 World Adventure Golf Masters and 2017 World Minigolf Championships. It has been a fantastic experience once again and this year I met many new players from New Zealand and Australia who I gave some coaching too. It was fantastic to team up with them and to see the sport growing even further this time. This is the first occasion where I have been self-coached at such a competition which a different challenge but something which I felt that I adapted well to. I would like to thank the support of my teammates, fellow participant and the WMF for all of their organisation and support, especially in some challenging conditions!”

The BMGA would like to congratulate Marion for her new role and also for all the superb work her team did in Zaton, covering the three Championships that took place in Septmber (the World Minigolf Deaf Championships, World Adventure Golf Masters and the World Championships). Speaking following her election, Marion said “I was excited to be in Croatia as a Social Media Reporter, and really enjoying the experience when I was asked if I would stand for the Media Manager role. I was elected unanimously and I am super excited to be taking on the role. I have a great committee and will also be working closely with Minigolfnews, as well as looking to recruit more voluntary reporters across the globe!“

2017 Welsh Open review from Treetop Adventure Golf in Cardiff

The Welsh Open was again contested over three rounds of strokeplay on the ANCIENT EXPLORER course at the excellent TREETOP ADVENTURE GOLF CENTRE in Cardiff.

The 2017 WELSH OPEN players

After a thrilling final round, Jens Bergström from Sweden won the title, making his debut in a BMGA tour event with Steve Lovell second and Sean Homer third. As well as the overall Welsh Open title there was a dedicated trophy for the top Local novice and Martyn Williams was a popular winner (having supported the event for the three years we have been to Cardiff) and became the 2017 Treetop Open Champion with Simon Brown second and Gareth Taylor third.

Friday evening saw a co-hosted event with the BMGA and members of the Great Britain Minigolf Team along with Golf Development Wales (GDW) and proved to be a great curtain raiser to the main event on Sunday.

Speaking after the weekend, Sean Homer, BMGA Chairman said "It was fantastic to come back to Cardiff again for the Welsh National Open. Treetop have hosted the event for the past three years and it has become undoubtedly one of the highlights of the BMGA tour. Not only is the course a terrific challenge that always provides a great test for the players but the welcome and hospitality we receive from all of the team at the course is incredible. Friday night provided a great curtain raiser to the main event on Sunday and I'd like to say a huge thank you to Lydia and all the team on behalf of all the players who took part. Jens and Martyn both deserved their victories and the event was a great success once again. We look forward to returning again next season to one of our favourite venues on the tour."

The competition saw a number of 'firsts' with Jens becoming the first Swedish winner on our tour, Martyn winning the Treetop Open for the first time and a number of players enjoying their first taste of the Cardiff hospitality. But we also saw the creation of a brand new club - the Welsh Minigolf Club - and all of us at the BMGA and the existing clubs are delighted to see the formation of this new Club, supported by Treetop Adventure Golf and look forward to seeing them go from strength to strength in the coming months. More information will appear on the club Facebook page at and we encourage all our members to like and share the details.

The newest Club to arrive on the UK Minigolf scene - we wish them well!!

The tour moves onto Nottingham later this month for the Midlands Open before we close the season with the Kent Open at its traditional venue in Sidcup on Rememberance Sunday and the season finale the Star City Open in Birmingham in December. Details of all events can be found in the Upcoming Events section on our website.
