The year so far - a recap of the 2017 tour as we resume after the summer break PDF Print E-mail

With the summer break now a distant memory, we thought it would be a good opportunity to give you all a recap of the season so far as we move into the final stages of the 2017 tour.

Player participation is up by 4% on the events held in 2017 compared to those in 2016. Special thanks go to Owen and Paul Johnson, Dave Gomm and Steve Lovell for your support in having entered every event so far.

The PHCGC Open had an amazing 40 entrants, testimony to the club’s popularity and ‘play for fun’ attitude.

Major's wise, we saw an increase in the number of entrants for both the British Championships and the World Crazy Golf Championship, but a disappointing decrease for the British Open, an unfortunate side effect of the event being moved away from its traditional September slot due to the World Minigolf Federations championships taking place in Croatia. Rest assured the Open will be back in its usual position in the calendar for 2018.

We welcomed two new events, the Wasps and Worthing Opens to the tour calendar.

There has been six different winners in the 9 Strokeplay events held so far, including three first time winners, Steve Lovell, Mark Wood and Derek Bentall. Congratulations guys.

Dave Donnelly is yet another first time winner, winning the doubles event with Will at Dunton Hills in August. Again, congratulations Dave.

Nuno Cunha has won the most events so far, the British Masters, Worthing Open along with becoming the 2017 British Matchplay Champion.

In a tense Club Championships, held at Wroxham Barns, the Midlands Minigolf club emerged victorious going through the day undefeated.

Internationally, Will Donnelly represented GB in the World Championships, whilst we sent a team of nine to the World Adventure Golf Championships, both events being held in Croatia. The WAGM proved to be pretty successful, with Will picking up a silver medal in the youth section and Sean Homer and Paul Preston achieving excellent top 10 finishes in the seniors and men’s categories respectively.

Team GB finished in 8th and 10th place in the very competitive 17 team field.

Special mentions to the 3 rookies making their oversees international debuts, Andy Exall, Terry Exall and Matt Dodd, all of whom acquitted themselves ably in what can be a daunting experience competing against the world’s best. But in truth most of the Team performed well in testing conditions. And once again we would like to offer a huge thanks to Jon Angel and all the team at UrbanCrazy for their continued support of the British International players.

We have four remaining events on the calendar and hope that these are well supported.

  • 8th October – Welsh Open

  • 29th October – Midlands Minigolf Club Open

  • 12th November – Kent Open

  • 2nd December – Star City Open

In other news, you may be aware that Owen Johnson has sadly decided to stand down from the EC Committee with immediate effect, meaning that there is currently a vacancy. Should anyone be interested in filling the vacancy, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by Sunday 15th October

The EC would like to place on record their thanks to Owen for his enthusiasm and commitment during his time on the committee.

See you on a minigolf course sometime soon!
