Lions se vrate! The British Lions return from Croatia following the WMF World Adventure Golf Masters PDF Print E-mail

The best players in the world gathered in Zaton, Croatia last week to participate in the 2017 World Adventure Golf Masters (WAGM) organised by the World Minigolf Federation (WMF) who are the umbrella body representing world minigolf.

The 2017 WAGM Squad: (L-R) Andy, Mark, Matt, Paul, Will, Sean, Dave, Martin and Terry.

The event took place on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th September over five strokeplay rounds for all players. Monday's play was severely affected by the worst storms that the area had ever witnessed, causing a 10 hour delay before the event eventually started at 6.30pm local time. All of the players were relieved to get the competition underway and a huge note of thanks must go out to all the organisers, players and course staff for getting the course playable at all on the Monday. Thankfully the weather on Tuesday was perfect and produced some outstanding Minigolf from the players taking part.

After five rounds, Gunnar Bengtsson (SWE) took the title of World Adventure Golf Masters Champion by 1 shot from Marko Nuotio (FIN) with Harald Exl (AUT) in third, 2 shots further back. Great Britain Captain Sean Homer took the honours as top Brit, finishing in 16th place overall with Paul Preston coming 20th and Will Donnelly 24th. Dave Donnelly came 34th and Martin Greenhead 38th. Making their debuts for the GBR International team Andy Exall came 42nd, Matt Dodd 64th and Terry Exall 65th with Mark Wood ending the event in 70th place.

The individual category winners were as follows:

Youth:  Matej Vlcek (CZE)
Senior Women:  Paula Gay (USA)
Senior Men:  Marko Nuotio (FIN)
Women:  Katerina Reed (CZE)
Men:  Gunnar Bengtsson (SWE)

Great Britain had two teams entered into the competition finishing in 8th place and 11th place overall. Germany once again took the team title by 1 shot from the Czech Republic with Finland taking the bronze medal.

Full results from the competition (along with the first ever Deaf Minigolf World Championship's) can be found here.

Reflecting on the competition on their return, we caught up with some of the Great Britain squad who gave us their thoughts on the experience in Croatia.

Andy Exall "I liked the course and I'd like to return sometime maybe though to tear it up in a style I know I'm capable of. Highlights of the week for me were Paul's performance and also Matej winning the junior competition - albeit at Will's expense. Thanks again to all involved in the planning and to Urban Crazy for the very nice team uniform."

Martin GreenheadIt was a privilege to be part of the GB WAGM team again in a squad who performed well against the world’s finest minigolfers.  Despite major weather setbacks the organisers pulled out all the stops to give us a tournament on a fantastic course in a beautiful setting.  Thanks to Pasi and his team and to all at Zaton Resort for their hospitality.

Paul PrestonI was delighted with my performance in exceptionally difficult and ever-changing conditions.  But it was only made possible with the support of my GB teammates who showed me some great lines and was able to learn from them.  I would not have expected to have made the Great Britain 1 team before the event and achieved my best international performance so far.  A great platform to build upon for the rest of the BMGA Tour in 2017 and hopefully onto bigger and better things for 2018.

Mark Wood "As always, the WAGM was a fantastic event. Thanks to Urban Crazy for their continued support and to the rest of the GB squad for the comradery"

Sean HomerIt was a great week over in Croatia (apart from the apocalyptic Monday weather!) and all of the squad did themselves proud on and off the course. As Captain of the group I was extremely proud to lead the chaps on this adventure and would like to thank them all for their hard work and commitment on the course and also their excellent and entertaining company off it! A fine bunch and a credit to Great Britain and UK minigolf. All of us would like to say a huge thank you to all the other players and organisers for making the event such a success (in extremely trying conditions at times) and congratulate all the winners - roll on 2018!! VTGB!
