Adam Kelly wins another major in a high-quality weekend of minigolf in Hastings PDF Print E-mail

The 2017 British Open took place over the weekend of 8th and 9th July, attracting players from across the UK and Europe, all competing for the much coveted title in the twentieth edition of the tournament. After equalling the British MOS record of 24 on two occasions, Adam Kelly became a two time British Open Champion with a stunning victory, storming ahead of the field to win the event by 14 shots, picking up the trophy and £300.

Adam had a total score of 275 over ten rounds leaving him 85 under par. Sean Homer finished in second place with a total score of 289 (-71) picking up £200. Will Donnelly finished two shots further behind with a score of 291 (-69) earning £100.


Will finished just one shot ahead of Karsten Hein from Germany who finished in fourth place with a score of 292 (-68) and took the title of Top International Player picking up the trophy. Pauli Kuikka, from Sweden, finished second in the International Championship and sixth place overall with a total score of 300 (-60). Daniel Vlcek, of the Czech Republic, finished third and ninth overall with a total score of 306 (-54).


Speaking after his victory, Adam said “I am delighted to have added another major victory to a fantastic 2017. The British Open is always an exciting event and a tournament with a wonderful atmosphere, and this edition was no exception. Huge thanks must go to Simon and colleagues at Hastings Adventure Golf for the hospitality we received once again. It is always a pleasure to compete in Hastings. With thanks also to Castle Golf for designing and building such a phenomenal minigolf course, and of course the BMGA Executive Committee for all of their hard work to put on a top class event. Congratulations to Sean Homer, Will Donnelly, Karsten Hein and all other winners across the British Open weekend, as well as to Nuno Cunha for producing a phenomenal performance to take the British Matchplay title. The standard of play throughout the field was exceptional. Good luck to all tour players for the remainder of the season, in particular the Great Britain Minigolf Team at the World Adventure Golf Masters in Croatia this September.”


Ed Pope won the category 2 title and £50 with a total score of 313 (-47) and thirteenth overall. Rocky Bullin was the runner up one shot and one place behind with a score of 314 (-46). Adrian Amey finished third with an overall score of 319 (-41) and seventeenth overall.

John Sharp won the category 3/4 title and £50 with a total score of 327 (+3). Owen Johnson came second with a score of 340 (+16). Martin Relf finished third one shot behind on 341 (+17).

The 2017 British Open players get ready for the tournament to start on the Saturday morning


The Royal Trinity Hospice was nominated by Sean Homer after he won the traditional curtain raiser for the Open, the 2017 Players Championship on Friday afternoon on the championship course. Having reached the final fourball for the past 10 attempts, Sean won the event on his eleventh attempt with a final round score of 29. James Rutherford finished second with a score of 30. Will Donnelly and Adam Kelly were in third both shooting 31. All four players qualified after being placed in the top eight from the opening strokeplay round before winning their respective matchplay games.

Jan Hedstrom from Sweden won the 2017 International Players Championship, retaining his title after winning in the final round strokeplay against Matek Vlcek.

At the close of play on Saturday, the BMGA Hole in One Challenge took place on hole 7. Congratulations to Martin Relf for managing to get an ace and a total of £26 was raised for the BMGA 2017 charity of the Royal Trinity Hospice, in addition to £34 raised at the World Crazy Golf Championships and £75 at the Players Championships.

The British Matchplay Championship semi-finals and final were also played this weekend.

Nuno Cunha beat Steve Lovell by 1 with an ace on the last to win his semi-final. Will Donnelly beat Adam Kelly in his semi-final also with an ace at the last. Nuno went on to beat Will 2&1 in the final of the BMGA British Matchplay Championships to take the title having lost out in the final in the previous two years. The match was played with outstanding quality including Nuno missing just one of the last nine holes. Adam beat Steve 3&2 to take third place overall.

The standard of play throughout the field was exceptional and Adam was a class apart over the weekend. It was great to see our International friends again and their presence always enhances the experience. With the topsy turvy calendar across the federations and so many events taking place at this time of the year - due to the WAGM and World Championships taking place in September - it was fantastic to be able to welcome them and the rest of our UK players to the competition. Thanks as always to Simon and the team for their incredible hospitality and we look forward to coming back to Hastings in 2018 for more top class events“
