The 2017 BMGA Tour got underway with the return of the English Open, once again taking place at the Lost City Indoor Adventure Golf course in Nottingham, on Sunday 5th March. 28 players from across the UK, representing all of the current British Minigolf Clubs, descended on the course for the three round event that took place on the Temple Trail course at the Cornerhouse complex in Nottingham City centre.

After a gripping final round that saw all of the top three players leading at some point, Sean Homer (Kent Minigolf Club) made it two wins in three years at the event, beating Steve Lovell (Sussex Wasps) in a thrilling 5 hole play off to take the title. Ed Pope (also of the Wasps) made it a career best finish by picking up the bronze medal. The drama of the final hole of the match saw both the top two with chances to the win the title but neither took the opportunity to close out the competition, leaving it to the play off to decide the Champion for 2017.

Speaking after the event Homer said "I've been in some classic battles over the years but this one will live long in the memory in particular due to the drama of the final round. Steve and Ed were both producing some outstanding Minigolf on the front nine and really put the pressure on. The last few holes felt like we were in an extreme matchplay contest as aces flew in and key shots saw the lead swing to and from. I thought Steve had me beaten when he nailed the penultimate lane but final holes in events have produced some major turning points on our tour and both of us had chances, and let them slip, to secure the win on the last hole. The play off was pretty intense and I was of course delighted to bang in the final ace of the event to win it. I know Steve will be devastated to lose after such a titanic battle but I think it is only a matter of time until he finally picks up his first tour victory as he continues to go from strength to strength as a player - i'm just glad that it wasn't this weekend that he broke his duck!".

He went on the add "It was a great day in Nottingham and I'd like to thank Lane and all the team at the course for hosting the event, my fellow EC members Paul and Scott for helping to run the event seamlessly, my playing partners for the day (David H, Kathryn, Steve and Ed), my team mates (VTK!) and of course Marion, my number 1 fan. And lastly I'd like to thank the mighty KMGC DECADE ball... the only ball I've used at the course for the past 2 seasons - and I look forward to coming back to the East Midlands next season to defend the title."

Other winners at the event included Seve Kukielka (Midlands Minigolf Club) who won the category 2 title with Ruth Burke (also Midlands Minigolf Club) taking the silver medal having beaten Paul Johnson (Kent Minigolf Club) in a play off. Local player and former winner of the English Open James Trubridge won the combined Category 3 & 4 title with Alex Hyman second and Jake Tetley third. Scott Lancley (Kent Minigolf Club) won the aces champion prize with team mate Owen Johnson winning the most improved player award.
