The popular Birmingham complex hosted the final event of the 2016 BMGA season
The 2016 British Minigolf Association season closed on Sunday 4th December when the Adventure Island Mini Golf course at Star City, Birmingham hosted the BMGA Star City Open. Players from across the UK took to the recently relaid greens at Star City for three rounds (54-holes) on the challenging Lost Hut Trail 18-hole indoor course.
Michael Smith won the event and cemented his number one ranking position for the year end having beaten Martin Greenhead in a sudden death play off to take the title. Chris Smith finished third.
Speaking after his victory at the weekend, Michael said “I’m delighted to have won the Star City Open. The tournament was a great way to end the BMGA Tour for 2016 with the changes to the course being a real leveller and an exciting conclusion with two play-offs won with aces. I’d like to congratulate Martin on a fantastic performance which will hopefully act as inspiration for many players on the tour that there are more than 4-5 players who can win these tournaments. As always, a huge thank you to the Executive Committee for all their hard work in running the tournament and to the course owner John Whitehead and his team of friendly staff for hosting the tournament.”
Other winners at the event saw Michael take the Category 1 win with Chris Smith second and Mark Wood third. Martin won the category 2 prize with Andy Exall second and Ruth Burke third. Ed Pope won the Category 3/4 title with Simon Farmer coming second and Alex Hyman making his debut on the tour, third. Three players won the Most Improved Player gold medals - Jack Nixon, Owen Johnson and Marion Hartley.
Sean Homer, Chairman of the BMGA, said "We had another great event and it's proving to be a very popular end of season venue for us on the tour. The newly relaid and redesigned holes have made a great course even better and I'm sure I speak for all of the players by saying we look forward to returning in 2017 once again for the BMGA tour climax. John and the team in Birmingham always make us feel very welcome and the event has become one of the highlights of our calendar as a result"
