Adam Kelly crowned British Champion in Norfolk

The two day BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS were contested at Wroxham Barns Adventure Golf Course in Norfolk across the weekend of 7th and 8th May. After seven rounds of outstanding minigolf, Adam Kelly (Kent Minigolf Club) took the title by one stroke to win the overall event. As well as the championship title, Adam also won the British Men's Championship.

Adam was pushed all the way across the weekend by UK number 1 player Michael Smith (Midlands Minigolf Club) and fellow Kent Minigolf Club teammate Sean Homer with all three players tied for the lead after 5 rounds.  After shooting a 29 in the 6th round, Adam went into the final round 5 shots clear of his rivals but in a tense and thrilling final 18 holes, the gap was cut and the title went right to the wire with Adam winning the event and picking up his third Major title at the final hole, finishing 33 under par for the competition, beating the former British Champion Michael by 1 shot and Sean by 2 shots.

Reflecting on his success after the competition Adam said “What a weekend! Thankyou for the comments and support from everyone in KMGC. I never would have believed after the first three rounds that I'd have the trophy tonight! That was an unbelievably tiring and stressful final round, so for those of you who were there and saw it I apologise for the lack of excitement at the end! I genuinely didn't have any energy left to be excited, I was just so relieved it was over. Another great showing from our club, following the epic success at the recent Club Championships! We've come away with seven medals (Marion, Tony, Sean x2 and myself x2) and three of the overall top four places in the event. I was lucky to play all seven rounds alongside Sean and what a performance! Great company as always too and I think we really helped each other to keep in good spirits through the ups and downs. And a mention for a phenomenal under the radar performance from Tony, achieving his best ever major result despite that first round and rather embarrassing opening hole! Maybe Marion was right that his unfortunate encounter with a seagull on Saturday night was good luck after all! I love Wroxham Barns and it's incredible how well the course has kept in shape in the three years we've been away, the perfect venue for a tournament in bright sunshine. Now we've all got our sights set on Hastings, let's keep up the KMGC winning streak...VTK!"

As well as the overall British Champion being crowned, along with the Men's title, the event also saw the British Senior, British Women and British Junior titles being fought out across the 2 day event. Sean Homer, third in the overall event, won the Senior title (making him a 3 time Senior champion) with Tony Kelly (Kent Minigolf Club) 2nd and Chris Smith (Midlands Minigolf Club) 3rd. In the Women’s Championship, Ruth Burke (Midlands Minigolf Club) retained her title, with Brenda Smith (also Midlands Minigolf Club) 2nd and Marion Homer (Kent Minigolf Club) 3rd. Will Donnelly (Midlands Minigolf Club) won the Junior title with Owen Johnson (Kent Minigolf Club) 2nd. In the Men's Championship, with Adam and Michael taking the gold and silver respectively, Chris Wood (Cambridgeshire & Essex Minigolf Club) secured the bronze medal after a sudden death play off with Paul Preston (Sussex Wasps Minigolf Club).

BMGA Chairman Sean Homer said “It was great to come back to Wroxham after a three year break and we always have a tremendous event when we visit the course and this year’s event was no exception. The twists and turns in the final stages of the competition proved to be a fitting climax to an excellent competition. Adam showed incredible strength of character with the pressure that he was under in the final round and the victory was hugely deserved. I would like to thank all who played at the event, everyone who helped with the running of the competition over the 2 days, the players who gave up their time on the Friday for the Pro-Am and a special thanks to the course owner David Packham along with Ian Russell and all the team at Wroxham Barns for their hospitality, over the weekend."

Three of our Great Britain minigolf players (Steve Lovell, Adrian Amey and Paul Preston) will be taking on all comers at the Nations Cup taking place next weekend in Portugal. Further details and updates will appear on the BMGA website, Facebook site and Twitter account over the coming days and we wish all three the best of luck on their travels!
