Star City Open to tee-off BMGA’s 2009 Minigolf Season

The British Minigolf Association’s 2009 Season will be teeing off at Birmingham’s Star City on Sunday 18th January as the Adventure Island Mini Golf Complex stages its first major tournament, the BMGA Star City Open.

Over 30 players are expected to descend on the 36-hole indoor Adventure Minigolf course to compete in three rounds of competitive Minigolf, with a cash prize up for grabs to the winner. Prizes will also be on offer for top local/novice players and for the best junior of the competition. The entry fee to play in the BMGA Star City Open is £15.

Adventure Island Mini Golf’s Manager John Whitehead said “"It is a pleasure to have been chosen to host the first indoor BMGA event here at Adventure Island in Star City, Birmingham. The courses are great fun for all but we hope that they also offer a great challenge for the competitors in our tournament, we are sure it will be a great weekend of minigolf!"

Chris Harding, Captain of the Midlands Minigolf Club, 2007 World Crazy Golf Champion and a regular at Star City’s Monday Night Minigolf League said “I'm delighted that Star City will be hosting the first tournament of the year. It will be very interesting to see how the top players from around the country perform on a course that they won't have had much if any practice on. Hopefully that will give me and the other local players a distinct advantage.”

The Star City centre is England’s first Indoor Adventure Golf Complex and features two themed 18-hole courses, the Lost Hut Trail and the Hidden Cove Challenge, and is set on its own lush tropical ‘adventure island’. The courses have been built across 3 levels and wind past palm trees and volcanoes, through caves, behind waterfalls and through Tiki Villages.

The tournament is the first the British Minigolf Association has held on an indoor course and tournament organiser ‘Big Top’ Ted McIver said “The sport of Minigolf is a game of skill and subtlety and the reports from players visiting Star City since it opened last year suggest that the BMGA Star City Open will be a good test of players Putting abilities.”

There will also be a practice session for players taking part on Saturday 17th January and the Monday Night League at Star City will also be an opportunity for players to come along for a pre-tournament practice. Ted McIver said “Many BMGA Tour members have signed up to compete in the BMGA Star City Open with quite a few travelling from far afield and we would like to encourage more local people to come along and play a competitive game of Minigolf to see how much fun the sport is.”
