Smith achieves the 'triple crown' as he adds the Welsh Open title to the English and Scottish titles PDF Print E-mail

The first weekend in September saw the arrival of a brand new event on the BMGA tour - the Welsh Open - at Treetop Adventure Golf in Cardiff.

The event, three rounds of strokeplay, played exclusively on the Ancient Explorer Course, saw 25 players battle it out for the Welsh Open title along with the Treetop Open title (exclusively for Local novices).

Michael Smith won the overall event with a 3 round score of 16 under par, including setting the course record of 29 in the final round. Chris Smith took the silver medal with Steve Lovell taking the bronze. In the Treetop Open Championship, Russell Crocker took the honours with a superb 6 over par score with Martyn Williams second and Jez Millard third.

Speaking after his victory, Michael said "I’m delighted to have won the first ever BMGA Welsh Open. It was a real privilege to play at such a great venue with such friendly staff that provided superb hospitality all weekend. The course itself is very enjoyable, but as some of the scores from some experienced tour pros demonstrate, there are a few holes which have a very low margin for error and some extremely testing second putts. I’d also like to thank Sean and Marion Homer for their tireless work and flawless organisation, and all the players who made what was in some cases, a very long journey to compete in the tournament.”

On the Friday evening, the event was officially launched with a pro-am event at the course, featuring members of the Great Britain international team and local teams, all playing for the Welsh Pro-Am trophy! In a thrilling evening, the BBC One Show team took the gold medals. Full results from the pro-am can be found at

Reflecting on another excellent weekend of minigolf, BMGA Chairman Sean Homer said “It is always great to see a top quality venue added to the growing list of BMGA tour courses and Treetop Adventure Golf in Cardiff provided a fitting location for our first ever Welsh Open. The welcome that all the players received was second to none and I am sure that we will return again and again to such a brilliant venue. I would like to say a Huge thanks to Elizabeth, Gavin and all the team at Treetop Adventure Golf in Cardiff for their hospitality throughout the event. Kicking the proceedings off on Friday night with the Pro-Am event was a great way to start the Welsh Open weekend. Thanks to all the players who took part in both the events over the Friday and Sunday and a special thanks to all the tour pros who gave up their time on Friday night to make the Pro-Am event such a success - hats off to Michael Smith, Marion Homer, Matt Dodd, Helen Dodd, Chris Smith, Brenda Smith, Dave Gomm and Andy Wilde for their input and support.”

The next event on the BMGA sees the second Major of the year takes place when players from across the UK along with international minigolfers from Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Georgia and Portugal will be making their way to Strokes Adventure Golf Course at Margate for the 2015 British Open, taking place over the weekend of the 19/20 September.

The competition will again take place across 9 rounds with 5 rounds being played on Saturday and 4 rounds on Sunday. This year will again see all players qualifying for Sunday (there will be no cut as per the past few years). As is traditional, the final round on Sunday will be contested amongst the top 18 players with the winner taking home the top cash prize and the trophy.

Entries are now open and the latest list of confirmed entrants can be found at

Friday 18th will also see the Players Championship take place, the traditional curtain raiser to the British Open weekend. Further details of both events can be found at
