The 2013 Youth European Championships tee-off on Wednesday 7 August and three members of the 2013 Great Britain Minigolf squad are taking part in the event in Portel, Portugal. Will Donnelly (Kent Minigolf Club) and Freddie Blackburn-Shaw (Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Club) are both competing in the event supported by fellow International Michael Smith (Kent Minigolf Club) as the teams official coach for the competition.

Players from eleven countries - Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, , Portugsl, Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Sweden - will be competing in the tournament held on the two 18-hole courses - one Swedish Felt and the other Eternite - across the competition days 7-10 August..

Speaking before he departed for Portugal last week to prepare for his first competition ouside of the UK, Will said "I am really looking forward to representing Great Britain at the upcoming Youth European Championships, it promises to be a great event which I know that I will enjoy. We are very privileged to be receiving coaching from the British number one Michael Smith as well as Finland who are one of the best minigolf nations in the world. I would really like to thank Sean Homer (BMGA Chairman) & Michael for organising this; it will make a really big difference as I have never played Eternit surface before & only have a very limited amount of experience on Swedish Felt. I would also like to thank everyone who has given me support ahead of the upcoming championships; it really means a lot to me."

Freddie, making his second appearance in Europe having taken part in the European Championships last year, said "I was very excited to hear that I had been called up to play for the Great Britain team. This is a great honour for me as I wasn't expecting another call up after last year where I came last in the European Championships. I am looking forward to having a bit of fun, meeting new people along the way and looking forward to a great tournament.”

The tournament sees Michael make his debut as a coach for the National Youth Team, having previously represented Great Britain as a player at the Nations Cup and World Championshipos in Stockholm in 2011. “I cannot wait to be part of a Great Britain team that is taking part at the Youth European Championship 2013" said Michael as he prepared to depart for Portel. "Only Rocky Bullin (2008 and 2009) has competed in a Youth European or Youth World Championship so it is an honour to be a part of Great Britain team making history. Both Freddie and Will have shown an incredible amount of determination to go to Portugal for what will hopefully be an excellent experience for them. The fact that Freddie finished 8th in the BMGA Order of Merit 2011-2012 and that Will is currently in 6th place in the latest Order of Merit shows that they are not only fantastic prospects for the future, but are also playing at a high level right now. The experience they gain in Portugal will hold them in good stead for the future, both domestically on the BMGA Tour and at International tournaments where they will be a key part in future Great Britain Men’s teams. I would like to thank the four parents/guardians travelling with the three of us, as well as BMGA Chairman Sean Homer, the WMF Youth Officer Martin Tomanek, and Finland’s Pasi Aho, without whom this excursion would not have been possible, as well as our team sponsor, Urban Crazy.  We are particularly looking forward to working with the Finnish players and coaching team. It is never easy for Great Britain when we go abroad as we have no suitable courses to practice on, but I can promise that we will put every ounce of effort into getting the lowest possible scores, and I have every confidence that Will and Freddie will do Great Britain proud.”
