Splash Point Minigolf Course in Worthing To Stage British Masters Minigolf Tournament PDF Print E-mail

While the world’s top golfers are battling it out on the fairways and greens of Augusta for the coveted Masters green jacket in April, Britain’s minigolfers will compete in their own British Masters on the south coast.

A field of more than 20 players will compete over 72 holes (4 rounds) of minigolf on Sunday 14 April, to coincide with the final day of the US Masters in Augusta. The winner will receive a cash prize, the British Masters trophy and the legendary tweed jacket - which unlike its Augusta equivalent is passed on from winner to winner rather than being tailored for the champion each year.

Michael Smith, from Oxford, is the defending British Masters champion, British number 1 and current holder of the domestic ‘Grand Slam’ of three major titles. ‘I am really looking forward to returning to Worthing to try and defend my title,’ he said. ‘Splash Point is arguably the most interesting and unique course on the British Minigolf Association (BMGA) tour, not to mention one of the most difficult. At least 7 of the top 8 players in the current rankings will be competing, along with one of the course owners. It should be a fantastic tournament and I cannot wait for it to start.’

The strong field includes 2008 British Masters champion John Moore from Newcastle; British junior champion and British number 2 Adam Kelly from Cambridge; and five members of the GB team for this summer’s World Minigolf Championships in Germany.

The weekend will also feature a Hole in One charity challenge on Sunday afternoon and league matches between members of different minigolf clubs on Saturday.

Splash Point Mini Golf opened in 2010 on the seafront at Worthing. The course, which is owned and run by BMGA members Peter Emmerson and Anthony Pope, is playing host to the British Masters for the second successive year."Splash Point Mini Golf is proud to be bringing the BMGA British Masters back to Worthing for a second year," said Anthony Pope. "We are looking forward to seeing the UK’s best minigolfers in action again on the seafront. We are also happy to support the valuable work of the British Minigolf Association in its development of minigolf sport across the country. We are sure that all of the players will have a great time at the course and a great stay in Worthing."

"
The British Masters is always an eagerly anticipated event on the tour and with Splash Point hosting the competition for the second year in a row, we should see a feast of minigolf as the top players from across the UK fight it out for the honour to wear the coveted BMGA Masters jacket and be crowned the Masters champion 2013," said BMGA chairman Sean Homer. "The course always proves to be a tough challenge and will be one of the hardest events to call in terms of who will win. Michael Smith, the reigning champion and British number 1, is the favourite but will face tough opposition on the day from a number of players. Whoever wins will be a worthy champion and it promises once again to be a brilliant event."

Full round by round results will be streamed 'live' on the internet from Sunday morning at the following link: http://www.bmga.co.uk/2013BM/result.htm (this link will show the confirmed registered players prior to the event start on the 14th).

Although popular as a seaside game for players of all ages and abilities, minigolf is also a serious professional sport requiring skill, technique and composure under pressure. Players practise for many hours in advance to develop their putting lines, ball selection and course knowledge, in order to find the best angles and rebound shots.

The BMGA tour features events throughout the year at venues across the UK. In 2013, the tour will visit Birmingham, Hastings, Worthing, Wroxham, Bournemouth, Margate, Sidcup and Basingstoke. Following successful appearances at the World and European championships in Stockholm and Porto in 2011 and 2012, the BMGA will also be sending a strong British team to the World Minigolf Championships in Bad Munder, Germany in August.
