Dear fellow minigolfer,

Some updated news and information regarding the British Minigolf Association including two new events to keep everyone busy once the Olympics finishes at the weekend!


Congratulations to Michael Smith for winning the 2012 British Matchplay Championship at the Lost Island Encounter in Sidcup on Sunday 22nd July, beating KMGC team mate Adam Kelly in the final. Sean Homer, the 2010 & 2011 Champion came third, beating David Donnelly in their final match. Across the weekend of the 14th & 15th July, the BMGA took part in the first Oswestry Games, a multi-sport event in Shropshire. Full details of the coaching, pro-am and main events from the weekend, along with a selection of photos from the events can be found at

The previous weekend saw the Crazy Golf Pro Championship on the rooftop Crazy Golf course at Selfridges in London take place. The competition was hosted by the course designers, food architects Bompas & Parr and Minigolf company Urban Crazy. 1) PIRATE COVE SMUGGLERS CUP – Saturday 18th August sees the first event of a weekend double header as the BMGA and Adventure Experience team up to host the 2012 Pirate Cove Smugglers Cup, taking place between 10am and 4pm at the Smugglers Course at Pirate Cove, Bluewater Park.

Entry is just £5 per round per person and in a first for the BMGA, to encourage new players, the event is open to the general public and non BMGA tour pros only (whilst there will be no BMGA Tour Pro’s taking part in the Saturday event, BMGA referees and stewards will be on hand at the course to ensure the event runs smoothly and to assist with the scoring/rules where necessary).  Full details of the event can be found at

THE PIRATE COVE OPEN – Sunday 19th August sees the second event of the weekend at Pirate Cove, a three round strokeplay event, open to all!! Entry to the event is just £10 and there is a guaranteed prize fund on the day of £200. BMGA Tour pros who support the Saturday event by helping out with refereeing, scoring and marshalling the public event will get free entry to the Sunday event. Play will tee off from 10am with the course open from 9am for final practice. The course continues to offer their ongoing practice day rate of £10 for card carrying BMGA tour pros. 2) MIDLANDS OPEN – on Saturday September 8th, we return to Dorridge for another double header weekend as the Midlands Minigolf Club present their 2012 Open. The event will run across 4 Rounds with a start time of 10.30am and the entry rates for this event are £15 adults and £10 juniors. A downloadable application form can be found at – players can pay on the day but to help Paul Johnson and the Midlands club prepare can people please let me know if they are intending to play in this event.

3) BRITISH DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP – The British Doubles Championship returns again to the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge on Sunday 9th for the second part of the September double header. The event is limited to 16 pairs and there are currently just 3 places left so please get your applications in ASAP if you want to take part. Entry costs £10 per person and an application form for the event can be found at

All matches will be played out over 12 holes and the event will consist of 2 phases. Phase 1 will be a group phase with 4 groups of 4 pairs, with each pair playing the other pair in their group (3 matches). 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. The top 2 pairs in each group will qualify for the second phase (knockout) for positions 1-8. The bottom 2 in each group will go through to the 2nd phase for positions 9-16. All pairs will play 6 matches.

4) BRITISH OPEN – The weekend of September 22nd and 23rd sees the flagship event of the BMGA tour, the BRITISH OPEN return to Strokes Adventure Golf in Margate. The course has previously hosted the event in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and is regarded as one of the best courses in the UK, a fitting venue for our premier event of the year. All players will play 4 rounds on Saturday and then there will be a cut with the top 36 players (and ties) or any player making the qualifying score (176 strokes or lower) making it through to day 2. Sunday will see the qualifiers play another 2 rounds with the top 18 then progressing to the Super Final round to decide the winner.

Entry to the event is £35 for BMGA members and £15 for juniors (under 18's) and £40 for non-members. The application form can be found at

5) WORLD CRAZY GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP - Booking is now open for all for the 2012 World Crazy Golf Championship in association with Castle Golf. The competition with take place across the weekend of 27th & 28th October and for the third year running will be played entirely on the Hastings seafront Crazy Golf course only. There will be a total prize fund of £3000 for the event; including £1000 top prize for the winner and for the first time we will also have prizes for the top novice players at the event!! Entry to the competition is £35 and includes free practice on Friday 26th October along with a guaranteed six rounds of competition across Saturday and Sunday.
