Smith becomes a two-time Weymouth Open champion by retaining title

The fourth-annual Weymouth Open minigolf competition was won by Oxford’s Michael Smith, with a three shot margin over Luton’s Richard Gottfried. Smith scored rounds of 40 and 38 retain the title he won last October with a 36-hole total of 78(+6). Chris Smith was third in the tournament with a score of 83.

The competition took place at the 18-hole Pirate Adventure Golf course at the Sea Life Centre in Lodmoor Country Park in Weymouth, Dorset on Sunday 10th October, and saw 13-players competing for the prestigious trophy and the £100 winner’s cheque.

Two-Time Weymouth Open Champion Michael Smith said "I'm delighted to win the 2011 Weymouth Open. I played very well, especially in the second round on what is an extremely difficult test of skill, concentration and patience. I had to be at my best to come through and win. The standard was even higher than the 2010 Weymouth Open and I would like to congratulate Richard Gottfried in particular for pushing me very hard. It was a fantastic day all-round with good weather and a great standard team competition to end the day. Thank you to Ed and the staff at the Pirate Adventure Minigolf course and to all the competitors for travelling so far to take part. I very much look forward to the last few events of the 2011 BMGA tour season."

Birmingham’s Matthew Harding was the Top Junior Player for a second year in a row and received an Annual Merlin Entertainments Pass.

Weymouth’s Ed Evans won the top local player prize and £60 of Argos Vouchers after finishing one shot ahead of Allun Wakefield who finished on a score of 100.

Luton’s Emily Gottfried was the tournament Aces Champion with three holes-in-one over the two rounds. This year a total of nine holes-in-one were scored, compared to four last year.
