Hither Green’s James Rutherford wins the first-ever Green Open

The final British Minigolf Association Tour competition of the 2010 Season took place on Saturday 18th December, as the Green Open minigolf tournament was held at the
18-hole Green Indoor Mini Golf course in Hither Green, Lewisham.

Hither Green’s James Rutherford took the victory with a score of 134(-10), consisting of rounds of 37, 36, 32, and 29. Margate’s Scott Lancley was runner-up. Oxford’s Michael Smith was third, having beaten Kent Minigolf Club team-mate Adam Kelly in a sudden-death play-off at the third extra hole.

There was some consolation for Cambridgeshire’s Adam Kelly, who had led for the first three rounds, as he won the Aces Championship at the tournament, with 24 holes-in-one at the competition.

24 players battled the elements to reach the warm indoor minigolf course at The Green, and play took place over four 18-hole rounds. The tournament was James’ first individual BMGA Tour event, and the victory on his debut appearance means he enters the BMGA’s Order of Merit Ranking List at number 67 (of 98 players).

Along with the overall victory from James, Green Minigolf Club members picked up two other prizes, with Julio Kent winning the Top Junior contest, and Nick Sandqvist winning Top Novice. Marion Homer of the Kent Minigolf Club won the Top Woman prize. A new official course record was also set at the event, with Michael Smith scoring 27(-9) with his final round of the day.

BMGA Chairman Sean Homer said “The BMGA would like to thank Course Owner Nick Sandqvist for his hospitality and generosity on the day, to Marc Chapman for managing the scoring and also giving some great coaching advice to the new players in particular, and to all the players who braved the cold and the heavy snow to play in the event.”
