Manchester Miniature Open 2009On Saturday 25th July Richard Gottfried won the first Manchester Miniature Open minigolf tournament at the 9-hole Championship MiniatureGolf course at Playgolf Manchester. The second ‘Mini Major’ competition of the year was played over 27-holes, and in a field of twelve players Richard won with a three round total of 87, after scoring rounds of 27, 31 and 29.

After tying for second-place with scores of 90, Luton’s Emily Gottfried and Birmingham’s Paul Johnson played a four-hole cumulative score play-off to decide second and third-place. Emily was able to score a total of 11, while Johnson hit 15, giving Emily her highest minigolf tournament finish to date, and Johnson his second third-place in a Manchester Mini Major.

The tournament was organised by Championship MiniatureGolf, in association with American Golf, and supported by the British Minigolf Association (BMGA).

Luton’s Richard Gottfried, a member of the Midlands Minigolf Club, said “I am so happy to have won my second Mini Major minigolf title. I seem to play really well on the tough greens in Manchester. It’s so difficult to ace any holes here that a two is worth its weight in gold. The final round was very tense, as going into it I was only two shots ahead of Emily and Nick Ashfield. Emily did very well to get second place.”

In the Junior Manchester Miniature Open competition Manchester’s Fraser McNeil defeated four other players to take the title with a three round total of 91. Second was Birmingham’s Owen Johnson with 94, and in third was Manchester’s Lewis Peacock with 100. BMGA Junior Owen Johnson’s second place-finish was a significant improvement on the fifth place he recorded in April’s Manchester Mini Masters.

The Championship MiniatureGolf course is made up of nine mini versions of world-famous golf holes. At Playgolf Manchester you can play accurate, challenging versions of the 16th at Augusta, the 17th at St Andrews, and the 18th at The Belfry, all within minutes of each other. Constructed using high quality all-weather putting surfaces, the holes vary in length from 10 to 20 metres.
