Planet Hastings wins the first Smeeth Cup minigolf tournament PDF Print E-mail

On Sunday 17th May two of the British Minigolf Association’s top clubs, Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Club and the Kent Minigolf Club, competed at Strokes Adventure Golf course in Margate, Kent to become the first Smeeth Cup champions. The tournament was won by Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Club 11 points to 6.

The format of the Smeeth Cup team-challenge tournament saw both clubs field teams of nine players who faced off in a mixture of Foursome, Fourball and singles matches. One point was awarded for each of the 17 matches. To win the cup a team needed 9 points.

Following the tournament Tim ‘Ace Man’ Davies, Captain of the Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Club simply said “
Veni, Vidi, Vici, And Some!”

Sean ‘Freebird’ Homer, Captain of the KMGC, said
"I would like to say a heartfelt thanks to all the KMGC players for giving it their best both on and off the course at the inaugural Smeeth Cup at Strokes. I know it's a massive disappointment to lose, particularly given how close we were after the Fourballs and Foursomes with just one point between the teams. But the gods of minigolf just weren't smiling down on us as the singles ticked by, one by one. The bottom line is the team gave it everything we could on the day and unfortunately in this instance it just wasn't to be. Fair play to Planet Hastings for coming to our patch and taking the trophy.”

The draw to decide the host club for the first annual Smeeth Cup was held on 27th January 2009 and was won by the Kent Minigolf Club (KMGC) and so Strokes Adventure Golf course in Margate became the first host course for the tournament. The 2010 Smeeth Cup will be held at Planet Hastings, White Rock Gardens, Hastings.
The reasoning behind the tournament’s title is that it just so happens that the village of Smeeth is exactly halfway between Margate and Hastings.

Both clubs will also be competing in the BMGA British Club Championships at Sandbanks, Dorset on the 4th October.
