Chris Jones wins British Masters 2009 PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday 25th April Chris Jones of the London Minigolf Club defeated 29 players from the British Minigolf Association (BMGA) Tour to become the 2009 BMGA British Masters champion.

The win was Jones’ first BMGA Tour victory and he won the competition with scores of 17(-1), 17(-1), 18(par) and 20(+2) for a total of 72(par) which set a new course record. The victory has also moved Chris up from 21st in the BMGA Order of Merit Rankings to 15th.

New BMGA British Master Chris Jones said “After a lot of practice analysing the theory and finer points of Minigolf and acquiring all the right equipment I finally decided it was the right time to make my move and take the British Masters title. Well I almost wish it was that calculated, but like my World Conker Championship Crown in 2006, it came a bit out of the blue!”

Chris added “Perhaps not completely though, as I have been playing better recently and achieved my best ever score at Star City Birmingham earlier in the year with a 31, and I always thought Southend was my best chance of a win. Since I started playing Minigolf five years ago I have met some great people and have had a good coach in Brad (Shepherd) who educated me in the world of Minigolf. My final comment for everyone is, keep on trying, one day you will surprise yourself and win! I hope this is just the first of many for me.”

The tournament was played over 36-holes and held at Adventure Island’s Inca and Aztec Adventure Golf Course in Southend on Sea and was the first major of the year.

In second place was Andy Exall of the Kent Minigolf Club. Third was Jon Angel of the London Minigolf Club after he defeated Kevin Moseley and Brad Shepherd in a play-off.

The prize for top ‘Novice’ player in the competition went to Peter Jones of Flintshire, North Wales who scored 87(+15) and finished in 18th place overall.

The Aces Prize (most holes-in-one) was a five way split between Keith Kellard, Alan Norman, Terry Exall, Rocky Bullin and Steve Gow who each hit four Aces during the day.
