Report from the Great Britain Minigolf Sport Team Austrian Training Trip PDF Print E-mail

Players from the Great Britain Minigolf Sport Team recently travelled to Vienna and Eferding, Austria for a four-day minigolf training and coaching exercise with the Austrian National Team. The visit was part of a new World Minigolf Sport Federation (WMF) approach to training players in developing minigolf nations.

From the 19th March until the 22nd March the six Great Britain players underwent an intensive training programme which culminated in a 10-hole Eternit competition between the team and an examination on the player’s understanding of the topics studied. Each of the players received a WMF Minigolf Diploma and it is hoped that they will pass on what they have learned to fellow members of the British Minigolf Association (BMGA). The skills will also be useful for the Great Britain team taking part in the upcoming World Minigolf Championships in Odense, Denmark in August.

The six Great Britain Internationals who took part in the visit were Steve Gow, Jon Angel, Keith Kellard, Ruth Bullin, Chris Harding and newcomer to the Great Britain squad David Corkett.

The Captain of the Great Britain Minigolf Sport Team Steve Gow said ““It was really good for the players to learn more about minigolf ball selection, spin and competition preparation. We also learned about other important elements in international competition including nutrition. It was also interesting to get a video analysis of each of our putting styles and techniques. This will be very useful for future competitions.”

The WMF granted Great Britain and Austria funding in order to assist with costs incurred to train overseas. Later this year players from Austria will visit the UK in order to further develop their skills on Minigolf Open Standard (MOS) courses, meet with other members of the Great Britain team and the BMGA. Austria are currently ranked 4th in the world while Great Britain are ranked 20th.

The 10th Edition of the WMF World Minigolf Championships will be taking place in Odense, Denmark from the 19th to the 22nd August and the Great Britain Minigolf Sport Team will be taking part for the fifth time, having previously had players competing in the 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007 events.

There are four minigolf systems recognised by the WMF; Concrete (Beton), Miniaturegolf (Eternit), Feltgolf (Swedish Felt) and Minigolf Open Standard (MOS). The focus for the training on the trip was to learn the techniques required to play on Feltgolf, which along with Miniaturegolf, will be one of the playing systems in use at the WMF World Minigolf Championships in August 2009.
